Seattle Pacific University, or SPU for short, is a Christian university located in Seattle, which is the northernmost major city in the contiguous United States, as well as the largest city in the Pacific Northwest and in the state of Washington, having a population estimated at a number of approximately 617 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census.
SPU was established in 1891, as the Seattle Seminary, being founded by the Oregon and Washington Conference of the Free Methodist Church, and it took its present name in 1977, after becoming known as the Seattle Seminary and College in 1913, and Seattle Pacific College in 1915. It currently has an enrollment of nearly 4000 students, and presently offers 59 undergraduate majors and 42 undergraduate minors, including 3 doctoral programs and 12 master's and post-master's degrees.
Seattle Pacific's sports teams are known as the Falcons, and they compete in NCAA Division II, in several sports, for both men and women, including in rowing, cross country, soccer, volleyball, gymnastics and basketball. Their distinctive colors are maroon and white and their mascot is, obviously, the Falcon.
Among SPU's famous alumni, there are: Bob Funk - Chairman of the board, CEO, and founder of Express Personnel, Denny Rydberg - president of Young Life, Larry Wall - programmer, linguist, author, most widely known for his creation of the Perl programming language in 1987, Edward Dillery - U.S. ambassador, Consulate General to Fiji (retired), and Doris Brown Heritage - five-time world cross-country champion, coach, USA Track and Field Hall of Fame.
